Indications:
Typically used for, but not limited to, diarrhea associated with:
• Tube feeding
• Infectious Diarrhea-Clostridium difficile (CDI), salmonella

Action:
Banatrol Plus is high in pectin, a soluble fiber that acts through absorption to reduce watery diarrhea to promote normalization of colonic fluid composition. Soluble fiber is gel-like and helps thicken stool consistency, but does not promote hard stools and does not slow gut motility. Each dose of Banatrol Plus contains 2.75 grams Bimuno® a prebiotic Trans- galactooligosaccharide which is a food source for the beneficial bacteria that reside in the colon or gut. It is not destroyed or digested in the stomach
or the small intestine so it reaches the colon where it feeds the good bacteria. The growth of good bacteria proliferates at a much faster rate than the harmful bacteria which become displaced, thus helping to restore normal gut flora.

Policy:
1) The policy of this facility is to assure normal stooling and intestinal health for residents with C. diff. infection, chronic bowel disease and/or are receiving enteral tube feeding or antibiotic therapy. Specifically, Banatrol Plus with organic banana flakes and Bimuno is provided to maintain normal stooling Clinically Proven Banatrol PlusTM with Bimuno® Prebiotic for Diarrhea with the start of antibiotic therapy and to restore normal stooling for diarrhea associated with any of the following conditions: C. diff. infection, medication use tube feeding, colostomy, and chronic bowel diseases. Banatrol PlusTM is provided as soon as C. diff. is suspected. Diarrhea, is defined as loose or watery stools, 2 or 3 times in a 24 hour period 2 or 3 days in a row, occurs most often secondary to medication, enteral tube feeding and/or C. diff. infection. The cost of diarrhea to the individual and institution are numerous, ranging from personal embarrassment to increased nursing and laundry costs to loss of skin integrity with increased risk for skin breakdown. Antidiarrheal medications act to decrease GI motility which can lead to a cycle of severe constipation relieved with laxatives which leads to diarrhea treated with additional antidiarrheal medication and so on. In the case of C. diff. infection, medications that slow GI motility are contraindicated because they allow for the build-up of C. diff. toxins and increase the risk of bowel perforation.
Banatrol Plus is a unique blend of organic banana flakes and Bimuno®. Dehydrated banana flakes contain a natural balance of pectin and potassium. In clinical studies, banana flakes were shown to effectively control the incidence of diarrhea in critically ill patients receiving tube feeding. 57% of the patients receiving banana flakes were diarrhea free versus 24% of the
medically treated patients even though three times the number of patients receiving banana flakes tested positive for C. difficile.1 Bimuno has been clinically proven to have a positive effect on the immune response by significantly improving the healthful balance of gut microflora.
